National Weather Service heat advisories and extreme heat warnings have been issued across much of California, including the Central Valley, Bay Area, Los Angeles, and Southern California regions, with temperatures forecast 10-15 degrees above normal. Los Angeles-area highs are expected to reach 85-105°F, San Francisco up to 86°F, and Sacramento near 100°F, driving a sharp increase in air conditioning demand that pressures the power grid, especially during evening hours as solar output declines. The California Independent System Operator (CAISO) forecasts peak demand of 47,379 MW on Wednesday and 45,183 MW on Thursday—below the 2022 record of 52,061 MW—while available capacity is projected around 67,586 MW. Wholesale power prices at the SP15 hub in Southern California have already risen, with day-ahead prices for Tuesday's 6 p.m. hour hitting $87.69/MWh. CAISO's 2026 Summer Loads and Resources Assessment indicates a reliability surplus under standard conditions, supported by recent capacity additions including battery storage, solar, and wind, though extreme heat events remain a noted risk factor. Grid monitoring shows solar generation estimates of 17-18.5 GW and strengthening wind, helping offset some strain, but the system is expected to rely more on natural gas during peak evening hours.
