The UC Davis Green Care Lab assigned teens to either gentle back petting or vigorous neck scratching with two miniature horses and two donkeys. Participants learned to interpret lip-wriggling as positive and walking away as a request for space. Neck scratching produced lip-wriggling in 75 percent of sessions versus 48 percent for petting, while walking away occurred in 42 percent versus 89 percent. All teens reported lower nervousness, sadness, and loneliness afterward, but those who detected and responded to equine cues showed larger drops. Earlier animal-assisted intervention research often treated animals as passive stimuli, overlooking mutual signaling that may drive inconsistent outcomes across trials. This bidirectional lens aligns with findings from equine-facilitated therapy programs for veterans that emphasize handler attunement to animal stress signals. Future protocols could integrate real-time behavioral monitoring to optimize both human mood gains and animal welfare, particularly in school or hospital settings where brief visits are logistically feasible.
