Pilot Crossover Trial Finds 3.6-Point Anxiety Reduction With 15-Pound Weighted Blankets in Acutely Ill Inpatients
Small pilot RCT demonstrates rapid anxiety reduction from weighted blankets in hospitalized adults but highlights tolerability issues and absence of objective endpoints. Larger blinded trials with physiologic measures are needed before routine adoption.
Larger multicenter trials are required to test dose titration by body weight, blinded sham controls, and longer-term outcomes including sleep architecture and length of stay. Integration into standard nonpharmacologic protocols will depend on demonstrating cost-effectiveness against existing relaxation interventions already used by nursing staff.
VITALIS: A 200-patient multicenter RCT will show sustained >2-point anxiety reduction at 4 hours post-intervention in fewer than 40 percent of participants by end of 2028.
