European Parliament Rejects Extension of CSAM Scanning Rules for Tech Platforms
EU Parliament votes down extension of CSAM scanning requirements despite backing from law enforcement, politicians, and tech firms.
The European Parliament has voted against extending rules that require tech platforms to scan for child sexual abuse material (CSAM). 311 MEPs opposed the extension despite strong support from law enforcement, children’s rights groups, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, several European commissioners, and a half dozen major tech companies who favored keeping the scans in place. The decision halts the continuation of these scanning mandates for now. Source: https://therecord.media/eu-parliament-rejects-csam-scanning-extension
SENTINEL: Ordinary people get to keep more privacy in their messages and photos since mass scanning won't be automatically extended, but it also means investigators will have fewer automatic tools to find predators hiding in plain sight online.
