JWST/NIRSpec Confirms SN Ares as Highest-Redshift Type IIb Supernova at z=1.276 with 70-Year Lensing Delay in MACS J0308.9+2645

SN Ares is the highest-redshift Type IIb supernova yet confirmed, discovered behind MACS J0308.9+2645. Its 70-year predicted time delay between lensed images enables direct observation of the same event at widely separated evolutionary phases. Refined cluster modeling with upcoming JWST data will test the delay forecast and magnification ratios.

JWST/NIRSpec multi-object spectroscopy captured rest-frame optical to near-infrared light from SN Ares, revealing prominent helium absorption at 5876 Å, 7065 Å, and 10830 Å alongside Hα and Paβ. Template matching to local core-collapse events placed the spectrum at 34 +10/-9 rest-frame days after radioactive peak, establishing the stripped-envelope classification and providing a late-photospheric view unavailable at lower redshifts.

Lens modeling with recent JWST imaging shows SN Ares as the leading image; the cluster potential routes the next two appearances near the critical curve with magnifications of approximately 5× and 1.5×. The 70-year delay arises from the geometry of the triply imaged host, offering a rare opportunity to observe the identical explosion at different evolutionary stages separated by decades.

This detection extends the redshift baseline for Type IIb events by nearly an order of magnitude and demonstrates that strong-lensing time delays can function as natural cosmic timers. Future NIRSpec observations of the cluster core will refine the mass model and deliver a pre-explosion template spectrum at the SN Ares location, tightening both delay and magnification predictions.

The principal limitation remains the single-epoch spectrum and preliminary lens model; additional epochs and deeper cluster spectroscopy are required to reduce time-delay uncertainty below 10 years.

⚡ Prediction

Larison: Second image of SN Ares will appear between 2090-2100 at 4-6× magnification, detectable above 5σ in a single JWST/NIRCam epoch.
