One-Month HEPA Use Speeds Executive Function 12% in Adults 40+ Near Highways
A one-month HEPA intervention produced a 12% executive-function gain in adults 40+ living near major roads. The crossover trial design strengthens causal inference, yet limited older-adult enrollment and brief exposure window constrain generalizability. Replication at scale could position residential air filtration as a practical cognitive-health tool.
Longer trials combining filtration with ventilation upgrades and biomarker tracking could clarify mechanisms and test durability. If replicated, portable HEPA units would represent a low-cost, rapidly deployable intervention for preserving cognitive reserve in polluted urban corridors, comparable in accessibility to daily walking prescriptions.
HEPA trial: A 500-participant replication in adults 60+ will detect at least 10% sustained executive-function gain after six months of continuous use.
