Nearly 60 Democratic lawmakers, led by Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-MA) and including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), sent a September 2026 letter to the Department of Justice and FBI demanding federal investigations into recent deaths of Black Americans found hanging, citing historical lynching and labeling it a 'national crisis.' The letter referenced over 70 suspected cases since 2000 and at least 10 in 2026 alone.

High-profile cases cited, such as Demartravion 'Trey' Reed at Delta State University and others in North Carolina, Georgia, and Mississippi, have largely been ruled suicides by medical examiners, with evidence including text messages, videos showing individuals acting alone, and absence of defensive wounds or foul play. One case, that of Tasia Fortune, was ruled a homicide with a Black suspect arrested. No cases have identified non-Black perpetrators.

CDC data confirms higher age-adjusted rates of suicide by suffocation (including hanging) among non-Hispanic Whites (4.6 per 100,000) than non-Hispanic Blacks (2.0 per 100,000) in 2020, consistent with broader patterns where White Americans account for the majority of such deaths.

This episode echoes the 1990s National Church Arson Task Force investigations, which examined hundreds of fires at houses of worship but found no national racist conspiracy; arrests for arsons at Black churches included both White and Black suspects, with motives ranging from racism to personal gain.

Critics argue the focus diverts from documented systemic factors affecting Black economic mobility, including high rates of single-parent households, underperformance in urban K-12 education, Black-on-Black violent crime patterns (with FBI data historically showing disproportionate intra-racial offending in homicides), and labor market competition from illegal immigration. A 2010 U.S. Commission on Civil Rights report found that illegal immigration increases the supply of low-skilled labor, tending to depress wages and employment opportunities for Black workers with limited education, particularly in sectors like construction and meatpacking.

These elements interconnect with housing market dynamics: family structure influences wealth accumulation and residential stability; educational outcomes affect earning potential and neighborhood quality; crime impacts property values and investment; and immigration pressures low-wage job markets that correlate with housing affordability challenges in urban areas. Solutions emphasizing two-parent families, school choice, criminal justice effectiveness, and immigration enforcement could address root contributors to economic disparities more directly than narratives of widespread racial terror.
