γ-Fe Nanoparticles in Chang'e-6 Glass Record Distinct Lunar Impact Magnetism
Chang'e-6 impact glass hosts previously undetected γ-Fe nanoparticles that can preserve single-vortex remanence. Their presence expands the magnetic mineral inventory and may separate shock versus thermal signals in lunar paleomagnetic records. Confirmation requires oriented samples and calibrated shock experiments.
The finding links lunar magnetism to early solar-system dynamics: stabilized γ-Fe could preserve field directions from the Moon’s final dynamo epoch and from transient fields generated by large basin-forming impacts. Future work needs oriented samples from multiple landing sites plus laboratory shock-recovery experiments that replicate lunar cooling rates to calibrate the recording fidelity of each phase.
Du et al.: Within 18 months, paleomagnetic analysis of γ-Fe versus α-Fe pairs from the same bead will shift published lunar dynamo cessation age by at least 150 Myr.
