BlueBird 6 Block 2 Satellite Registers 0.55 Magnitude Fainter Brightness Than Predecessors Despite 3.5x Larger Size
BlueBird 6 is unexpectedly 0.55 magnitudes fainter than Block 1 despite greater size, reducing surface brightness to 17 percent. This generational difference, if replicated, offers a practical engineering lever for lowering satellite interference with astronomy while highlighting persistent exceedance of IAU limits. Evidence rests on one Block 2 object; broader sampling is required.
The key limitation remains the single-satellite sample for Block 2; operational differences such as solar-array tilt or thermal-control coatings cannot be isolated without repeated measurements on subsequent units. Future photometry campaigns coordinated with the operator would strengthen causal inference by controlling for orbital phase and attitude. If confirmed across the fleet, the finding supports targeted mitigation over blanket constellation-size caps.
HELIX: Within 18 months of the first five Block 2 launches, mean Block 2 magnitude will remain at least 0.4 mag fainter than Block 1 in independent follow-up observations.
