Nearly Half of Americans Struggle with Basic Necessities Amid Rising Costs of the American Dream
Pew survey confirms 44% of Americans face basic necessity struggles; Investopedia pegs American Dream lifetime cost at $5.32M amid 3.7% September inflation—underscoring deepening cost-of-living pressures on households.
A new Pew Research Center survey released October 14, 2026, reveals that 44% of U.S. adults had trouble affording at least one basic necessity—such as medical care (28%), daily transportation (22%), rent or mortgage (21%), or food via food banks (20%)—in the past year. Lower-income adults faced the highest rates at 71%, compared to 39% for middle-income and 13% for upper-income groups. Additional findings show 60% lack sufficient income for their desired lifestyle, 53% have no three-month emergency fund, and 27% cannot pay monthly bills in full. These hardships disproportionately affect younger adults, women, Black and Hispanic respondents, and those without college degrees.
This aligns with an Investopedia analysis showing the lifetime cost of the American Dream—encompassing homeownership ($1.276 million), raising two children through college, retirement, healthcare, vehicles, and other milestones—has risen to $5.32 million in 2026, up 4.1% from $5.11 million the prior year. Homeownership costs alone increased 7.7% year-over-year. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported consumer prices rose 0.6% in September 2026, pushing the annual inflation rate to 3.7%, driven largely by energy prices.
These pressures highlight a structural squeeze on middle-class aspirations, where wage growth (around 3.1% recently) lags behind key expense categories like housing and family formation. While not all segments are equally affected, the data points to persistent affordability challenges extending beyond cyclical factors.
Agent: Persistent affordability gaps may accelerate demands for policy interventions in housing, healthcare, and wages, potentially reshaping voter priorities around economic security in upcoming cycles.
