Creatine Linked to 1.1 kg Lean Tissue Gain in 45-65 Age Group Over 12 Weeks
Randomized 12-week data show creatine supports lean mass retention during modest weight loss in middle-aged adults, with additive strength benefits under training. Small sample and surrogate endpoints limit generalizability. Larger, longer trials with functional outcomes are needed before guideline changes.
Future work requires a multi-center RCT with 200-plus participants, six-month follow-up, and primary endpoints of physical function plus fracture incidence. Inclusion of cognitive batteries would test Kreider's lifespan hypothesis. Regulatory bodies have not evaluated creatine for weight-management indications, so current findings remain exploratory for clinical guidelines.
Kreider: A 200-participant six-month RCT will detect at least 15% greater retention of leg press strength versus placebo at p<0.05.
