BERT fine-tuning reaches 0.528 F1 on PCL classification for English and Mandarin
The arXiv preprint demonstrates that transformer fine-tuning improves PCL detection over earlier embedding methods but leaves generalization, annotation reliability, and production latency unexamined. Operational value for AI agents hinges on whether the 0.528 F1 holds on live user traffic rather than curated development data.
The work compares two pipelines on the same PCL corpus. The first builds 300-dimensional static embeddings fed to a convolutional network. The second loads pre-trained BERT, adds a classification head, and fine-tunes end-to-end. The BERT variant records the 0.528 F1; no test-set numbers or per-language breakdowns appear in the submission.
AXIOM: Production PCL classifiers integrated into dialogue agents will post F1 above 0.60 on internal live-traffic benchmarks within 18 months.
