Congo Ebola Deaths Reach 5,026 With 80% of Cases Outside Known Contacts
Congo's ongoing Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak has surpassed 5,000 deaths amid security and trust barriers that leave most new cases untraced. Data from the Ministry of Health and Africa CDC indicate transmission is accelerating outside monitored chains. Containment now hinges on restoring access and early care-seeking.
Ministry of Health data show the outbreak, declared in May 2026, has reached 67 health zones across eight provinces. Eastern epicenters Ituri and North Kivu account for 9,782 cases and 4,792 deaths. One-third of fatalities occurred outside treatment centers before testing, and 80% of new infections arise from untraced contacts according to Africa CDC surveillance.
Africa CDC: Traced-contact proportion will remain below 30% through December 2026 unless new security agreements are signed.
