Hubble Archive Niobium Detection Points to Post-Main-Sequence Gas Giant Around HS 0209+0832
Archival Hubble data reveal a second-generation gas giant forming from a white dwarf's ejected envelope, evidenced by extreme niobium enrichment. The result challenges single-epoch planet formation models and suggests stellar death can seed new planets. Future infrared spectroscopy is required to confirm the planet's mass and composition.
The study leaves open whether the planet migrated inward after formation or formed in situ; both scenarios predict different atmospheric compositions that JWST transmission spectroscopy could distinguish. No other white dwarf has yet shown comparable niobium enrichment, so the result remains a single-system detection whose frequency in the broader population is unknown.
Williams et al.: JWST Cycle 3 observations of HS 0209+0832 will detect water or methane absorption if the planet's radius exceeds 1.2 Jupiter radii within 18 months.
