BLS Data Confirms Healthcare Dominates U.S. Job Growth Through 2035; Tech Roles Persist Amid AI Shifts

BLS 2025-2035 projections, corroborated by Visual Capitalist and official releases, show 5.9M net new jobs led by home care aides and nurses, with software developers still adding substantial roles despite AI pressures.

Official U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projections released in August 2026 show total employment growing by 5.9 million jobs (3.5%) from 2025 to 2035, with healthcare support and practitioner roles accounting for nearly one-third of net gains.

Home health and personal care aides lead with 847,300 new positions, followed by stockers and order fillers (251,000), fast food workers (223,000), registered nurses (195,000), and operations managers (181,000). Software developers are projected to add 175,000 jobs, while nurse practitioners see the fastest percentage growth at 41% (+138,000 jobs).

These figures align with analyses from Visual Capitalist, which ranked the top 30 occupations by net employment increase using BLS data. The projections highlight demand driven by an aging population, with adults 65+ expected to outnumber children under 18 by 2029 per Census Bureau estimates. Healthcare and social assistance sectors are forecasted to add over 2.2 million jobs.

Tech occupations remain resilient despite AI concerns: computer and mathematical roles grow 7.3% overall (+403,000 jobs), including data scientists (+95,000). Median wages in 2025 ranged from $35,800 for home aides to over $130,000 for software developers, nurse practitioners, and IT managers.

The data underscores a bifurcated labor market where high-growth fields span low-wage service roles and high-skill healthcare/tech positions. World Economic Forum insights note shifting skill demands toward analytical thinking alongside technical expertise.

⚡ Prediction

LIMINAL: Healthcare and caregiving roles will absorb much of the net job growth through 2035 as demographics shift, while AI may accelerate transitions but not eliminate demand for adaptable human skills in tech and nursing.
