Single heated tobacco session reduces vascular function by 11% and venous oxygen saturation from 71% to 46%
A controlled before-after study in 30 smokers found immediate vascular dysfunction, reduced oxygen saturation, and DNA damage after one heated tobacco session. Results challenge differential harm claims versus cigarettes and support uniform nicotine regulation. Long-term outcome data remain absent.
The study does not track duration of impairment or cumulative risk with repeated use. Larger longitudinal cohorts with objective cardiovascular endpoints are required to determine whether these acute signals translate into measurable increases in incident atherosclerosis or events over 2-5 years.
Münzel: Within 18 months, at least two European countries will apply identical advertising and flavor restrictions to heated tobacco and cigarettes after replication studies confirm acute endothelial effects.
