Wave Neuroscience MeRT Achieves 68% PTSD Remission in Unpublished FDA-Cleared Trial

Preliminary FDA-cleared MeRT trial reports 68% PTSD remission via personalized TMS, far above historical medication benchmarks, but data remain unpublished and uncontrolled. Larger independent replications with long-term outcomes are required before clinical adoption can be recommended.

Wave Neuroscience, working with Texas A&M researchers, received FDA clearance for Magnetic e-Resonance Therapy after a trial in which individualized transcranial magnetic stimulation protocols derived from EEG recordings and an AI algorithm yielded 68% remission. The approach departs from fixed-parameter TMS by adapting pulse parameters to each patient's brain activity patterns. Preliminary company-reported outcomes exceed historical SSRI remission ceilings of roughly 11%, yet the dataset remains unpublished and lacks disclosed randomization or sham controls.

Standard PTSD pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy leave most patients symptomatic, as shown by a 2020 review documenting modest score drops of 6.8–10.1 points. MeRT's personalization step addresses the heterogeneity of post-traumatic cortical dysrhythmias that uniform stimulation protocols overlook. This mirrors precision-medicine trends already reshaping depression care but has not yet been tested against active psychotherapy or combined regimens in head-to-head designs.

Next steps require independent, preregistered trials with 6- and 12-month follow-up to establish durability and to rule out placebo or regression effects. Real-world evidence registries tracking veteran and civilian cohorts will determine whether the reported remission rate translates outside specialized centers and whether access expands equitably across demographic groups.

⚡ Prediction

Independent replication study: >55% remission sustained at 6 months in a sham-controlled trial enrolling >200 participants within 24 months.
