Northern Finland Cohort Links Habitual Coffee Intake to Lower Visceral Fat and Sex-Specific Hormone Shifts
Observational Finnish birth-cohort data associate greater coffee intake with favorable fat distribution and sex-differentiated androgen profiles after adjustment for BMI and lifestyle. Causality remains untested; randomized trials are required to isolate active compounds and quantify clinical endpoints.
The University of Oulu analysis examined self-reported coffee intake against DXA-derived body composition, fasting metabolites, and serum hormones. Participants with higher consumption showed reduced total and visceral adipose tissue and increased skeletal muscle mass despite equivalent BMI. Branched-chain amino acid levels declined in both sexes, consistent with prior observational links to improved insulin sensitivity.
Verroest: A 12-week RCT of 400 Finnish adults consuming 0 vs 4 cups daily will detect ≥8% drop in visceral fat mass by DXA at p<0.05 by 2028.
