Malone Lam Pleads Guilty to RICO in Social Engineering Enterprise Crypto Theft Exceeding $245 Million

Lam and initial Texas roommates began operations in October 2023, funding rent via targeted calls impersonating Apple and Google support. They later recruited through gaming platforms, building a division of labor that included database hackers sourcing high-balance targets, callers extracting seed phrases, and burglars conducting residential hits on hardware wallets. Court filings detail at least one Washington, D.C. victim losing $263 million after being induced to install remote desktop software.

Prosecutors documented internal group messages expressing alarm over Lam’s public boasting and attempts to launder the largest single theft. Nine co-conspirators have already pleaded guilty. Arrests occurred in Miami and Dubai through 2024-2025, with Lam taken at a Miami rental on 18 September 2025. The pattern matches earlier Telegram-enabled crews that transitioned from SIM swaps to hybrid digital-physical operations.

Lam’s sentencing hearing is scheduled for 8 December 2025. RICO exposure carries 7-20 years; prior plea deals in the same case averaged 5-9 years when defendants provided substantial cooperation. Remaining fugitives and unrecovered funds will test whether the takedown dismantled the full network or merely its visible U.S. node.
