Rubin LSST DP2 detects seven almost-dark galaxies around M49 with surface brightnesses to 28.5 mag arcsec^{-2}
Rubin LSST Data Preview 2 has revealed seven almost-dark galaxies around M49 whose properties mirror the faintest known Local Group satellites. The find demonstrates that the forthcoming 10-year survey can deliver the large samples required to constrain the faint-end luminosity function and dark-matter models. Spectroscopic confirmation and completeness simulations remain essential next steps.
The Le et al. team searched Rubin LSST DP2 imaging centered on M49, applying surface-brightness-optimized detection algorithms tuned for extended low-surface-brightness objects. They recovered seven sources whose half-light radii (0.6-4.6 kpc at Virgo distance) and g-band central surface brightness place them squarely among the ultra-faint Andromeda satellites And XXI, XXIII and XXV, yet outside the Local Group volume. Photometric colors and lack of detectable HI emission indicate predominantly old, metal-poor stellar populations with minimal ongoing star formation.
These detections directly test the faint-end slope of the luminosity function and the minimum halo mass capable of hosting galaxies, quantities that discriminate between cold, warm and fuzzy dark-matter models. Prior wide-field surveys lacked the combination of depth, area and image quality needed to detect such systems systematically beyond the Local Group; DP2 already reaches the threshold where the expected number of analogs rises from single digits to dozens.
The 10-year LSST survey is projected to increase the sample by two orders of magnitude, enabling the first statistically robust measurement of the faint-end luminosity function inside a cluster environment. This will tighten constraints on reionization timing and on the efficiency of supernova feedback in the smallest halos. Follow-up spectroscopy with ELT and JWST will be required to confirm membership and measure velocity dispersions.
Next steps include deeper DP2 processing with improved deblending, cross-matching with X-ray and radio data to search for hot-gas or HI counterparts, and injection-recovery simulations to quantify completeness at 28.5 mag arcsec^{-2}. Early LSST results already show that the Virgo Cluster contains a reservoir of almost-dark galaxies previously hidden from view.
Rubin LSST team: At least 40 additional almost-dark galaxies will be catalogued in the Virgo Cluster by the end of year-three data release in 2028.
